Welcome to the site!

Welcome to my home on the web for my newest passion - precious metal clay jewelry.

This site serves two purposes, firstly as a place for folks to read along, and for me to share my online “finds”, and secondly, as a kind of “virtual workbench” and notebook for me to keep all of my online bits and bobs organized and in the one place.

I’ve broken the site up into a number of sections:

Blog

Blog

My blog is my virtual thinktank.. a virtual stream of consciousness where I record all of my day to day rantings, raving, experiments, trials, temptations and tantrums! It’s my hands on notebook of ideas and progress.

Finished Items

Not much in here as yet! I’ve only really got one piece to a stage that I would deem “finished”. However.. I’m considering putting enamel on that after I’ve done a course. Maybe I need to deal with the fact that until I have all of the techniques mastered that I want to learn.. no piece can be considered “safe” and finished.

Under Construction

Under Construction

All the things I’m working on and where I’m up to with them. Hope I can get lots of photos in here so that they can act as memory joggers for me if I need to make anything like them again! I also like the idea of keeping a record of this history of every piece. I guess because I haven’t actually made many many items yet, I kind of like the idea of keeping all of the “baby pictures” together. I’m such a sentimentalist!

Scrapbook

Much of my inspiration comes from ancient jewelry items. As I browse around the web I’m always coming across scraps of information and photos that inspire me and give me ideas. Instead of printing these off, I’ve made a little place for them here. My online swipe-file, if you will!

Other Sections in the works:

Waiting for Godot. er.. garnets.

Nearly finished 2 more pieces. The one on the left is going to be called “templar amulet”. I’ve got some ruby spheres coming and will place one in the back cavity of the dome, so that the red shows through like a templar cross. I’ll also put some garnets in the “portholes” and top toggle.

Ordered some big open link silver chain yesterday, and I’m curious how it is going to look on the a piece. I’ve also ordered some jump links to use on this one and on the other dome I have created. They are more of a rounded triangle shape, I think they were originally made for hanging briolettes from?

Another finished piece

I’ve created another donut.  Seem to be stuck on the shape for some reason!  I have one or 2 more “in my head” before I’m going to move on to some different shapes.    This one.. I finished off when my mother was here looking after my little boy.  We had some fun deciding which cabochons to put into the bezels.  She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m thinking of making her a piece as a thankyou gift for all the time she has spent looking after my little one while I have been at work.   Now I know what color stones she is going to like. :-)

Medieval Pendant finished

I took my pendant along to Hadar’s course (must write a post on that soon..) and got my pendant fired while I was there.  I’m thinking that I didn’t put enough vent holes in it, as part of the side blew out.  :(  Anyway, I patched it here at home (now we are in mid semester break - I have a little bit of time!) and torched fired it.. the patching worked really well, and the piece looked good.  Some aura 22 and LOS, and a few orissa garnets.. and Voila!

Amulet fired!

Finally got it fired and Aura applied around the inner rim and outer band as well as the inner of the toggle. I put a rock crystal in it for the photos, but I have a black tourmaline rutilated quartz sphere coming from China.. hope it fits!

Eye Candy Friday - 19th June 2009

There are so many beautiful pieces out and around the web today to feast your eyes on.  I’ve decided to keep yet another scrapbook type file of jewelry I , well.. lust after.  I could spend thousands of dollars on jewellery if I had it!  I love seeing what other people have done with PMC.  So.. every Friday I want to put a couple of featured pieces up from around the place.

And hey.. I might even show this to my husband as a hint-hint-hint when christmas time comes around!  ;-)

Beautiful Keum Boo!

Wood blanks and toggles

I finally took some photos of my new donut/ring with the “toggles” attached.. they have pre-formed bezels in them so that I can set a 3mm cab stone there.

First Finished Piece!

After polishing and re-doing the liver of sulphur around 20 times, I’m finally satisfied with the finish I got on my first donut!

One patina, two patina, three patina, floor.

Well I tried out LOS (Liver Of Sulfur) today for the first time.  Not particularly impressive results, unfortunately.  The piece looks OK.. but not as colourful as I would have liked.  I may polish it back and try again later at some point.

I’ve also put the toggles on my new donut.  It’s looking good!  I’m a bit worried about it not holding together during firing.. hopefully it won’t slump in the middle which is my biggest concern.  I found a tutorial on firing donuts, holefully I can fire it in this position when th time comes to prevent slumping.

Ring 2

This one started life as a wood clay core.

I then covered the two sides with textured clay and applied a rim to the outer edge.

Then I added the inner ring and the “points” were built up with slip.. inspiration courtesy of the Visby lenses.
